May Lunch Drive – Blue Berry Picking

By Dave Pilcher

Every year for the last four or five years we’ve driven out to the southeast of Dallas to pick blueberries (and blackberries) in the Edom area. Originally planned for Saturday 30 May, COVID-19 and slow ripening of blackberries caused us to delay to Saturday 6 June. Standard “social distancing” requirement will be in place. Since the farm is wide open, I don’t anticipate any significant restrictions to our visit.

We’ll meet in Seagoville at the Sonic Drive-in, 1920 S Beltline Rd, Dallas, TX 75253. This is just off US-175 and just south of I-20. The drive is about 75 miles and takes about an hour and a half. Because of this, we will leave the start point about 9:30 in order to get there around 11.

Upon arrival at the Echo Springs Blueberry Farm (7235 FM 607 N, Murchison, TX 75778), the staff will hand out baskets and suggest where to find the best berries.  Their recommendation was spot on last year as we all found large quantities of very tasty berries. Cathy and I (along with Sam Wood and Ruth Josey) even went to the back lot where they also had huge, sweet blackberries.  After picking (and eating) your fill, you pay your bill (about $28 for our two large buckets of blueberries and a half bucket of blackberries).
